Public sufferings mount as floodwater receding

Although floodwater has started to recede in the southeastern region, the overall situation has remained dire with communication networks still severely disrupted affecting 5.2 million people.
Nearly 1.1 million families stranded face mounting difficulties in accessing essential supplies, medical aid and transportation.
Currently, the total number of flood victims stands at 5,209,798, with 18 deaths reported so far, and two people still missing.
These figures were disclosed in the daily report issued by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR) on Sunday.
The report indicates that five deaths occurred in Chattogram, four in Cumilla, three each in Noakhali and Cox's Bazar, one each in Feni, Brahmanbaria and Lakshmipur. The two missing are from Moulvibazar.
A total of 3,654 shelters have been opened in the flood-affected districts, providing refuge to over 0.415 million people.
Along with rescue operations, governmental and non-governmental organisations are distributing relief supplies.
Deputy Commissioners of the flood-affected districts have been instructed to coordinate efforts with Army, Navy, Fire Service, Civil Defence, medical teams, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and other volunteers. Field hospital has also been set up in Feni.
Additionally, doctors from the Army and the Civil Surgeon's Office are providing medical assistance.
Local clinics, hospitals and health facilities have been directed to offer necessary services.
However, officials and volunteers said communications with Parshuram, Sonagazi and Feni Sadar are still vulnerable, disrupting relief and rescue operations.
As there is also a possibility of rain from Monday amid formation of a low in the Bay, the government and non-government rescue and relief teams should be more cautious about it, they also said.
Meanwhile, the ministry of fisheries and livestock in Sunday's briefing said fisheries and livestock sector incurred Tk 20 billion losses in the last few days due to the flash floods.
The agriculture ministry said above 0.34 million hectares of Aus Aman, vegetable fields have been inundated in the southeastern districts which might witness medium to total damage.
