Public varsities gradually adopting WiFi technology

Public universities are gradually adopting WiFi technology to facilitate information communication technology service to their students free of cost.
Different government and non-government organisations have come forward to collaborate in setting up WiFi in the universities to provide internet facility to the students.
Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Jahangirnagar University (JU), Chittagong University (CU) are a little advanced in providing the service. But all dormitories and some important places like teacher-student centre are not fully covered with the WiFi, sources said.
The WiFi facility is being spread in the public universities with the support of World Bank. Already, Chittagong University is getting funding from the bank and some more universities like Mymensingh Agricultural University and Khulna University are in the list.
BUET is taking the service to all its dormitories within this month. Base Technologies in association with Institute of Information and Communication Technology (IICT) is installing the WiFi technology. The firm is using world's best Aruba Network and EDGE core POE switch to provide finest Wi-Fi coverage.
Primarily a test experiment has been completed comprising site survey, coverage plan/radio-frequency plan, hardware installation and software installation, IICT director Dr. Mohammad Saiful Islam informed the media.
Also within this month, the CU is coming under the WiFi facility with the assistance from World Bank. WiFi service has already been set in the university`s administrative building, library, different faculties, nine student halls, Shaheed Minar roundabout, Zero Point and faculty residences.
Two months ago, the Teacher-Student Centre of Dhaka University (DU) was fully covered with the WiFi facility. Fiber@Home has provided the support to the DU. Meanwhile, students at the dormitories are enjoying internet facility through limited WiFi zone.
State Minister for Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology (ICT) Zunaid Ahmed Palak said the present government is giving attention to facilitate internet service to the universities.
He said students' involvement with access to information is foremost for the development of the sector to make an IT-based society.
