Public varsity teachers go on work abstention September 8

The Federation of Bangladesh Public Univer-sity Teachers' Asso-ciation (FBPUTA) will observe a daylong work abstention on September 8 to press home its demand for a separate pay scale.
They will also hold talks with the editors of different print and electronic media in the capital on September 10 and stage a sit-in at the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla at Dhaka University on September 13 to realise their demand.
"Putting emphasis on education through disrespecting the teachers could not yield any result. We are fighting for the cause of teachers' dignity. There is no scope to compromise," FBPUTA Secretary General Prof ASM Maksud Kamal told the FE on Saturday.
"We don't want to become entangled with the government. We want an amicable solution to our demand," said Maksud Kamal, also General Secretary of Dhaka University Teachers' Asso-ciation (DUTA).
The new 8th national pay scale is discriminatory for public university teachers, he said, adding that the movement of the teachers is not against the government.
"Our movement is not against the government rather upholding the dignity of teachers' community."
He said they (FBPUTA) met with the education and finance ministers and foreign affairs adviser to the Prime Minister in May last. They assured the teachers of taking their demand into account.
Though the government high-ups gave them assurance, but they (FBPUTA) are yet to get response from the government, Mr Maksud added.
The teachers of all 34 public universities will observe work abstention from 11:00 am. DUTA will bring out a procession from Aparajeyo Bangla to Shaheed Minar. They have been observing their programme since May 14.
Prof Maksud said the teachers organised a press briefing at the conference room of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on the day to press home their demand.
The vice-chancellors of different public universities, DUTA president Prof Farid Uddin and other teachers of these universities were present.
