Punish RAB men who shot Limon: HRW

Wednesday, 22 October 2014

Human Rights Watch (HRW), a New York-based global rights watchdog, has said the government of Bangladesh should prosecute the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel responsible for the 2011 attack on Limon Hossain that caused him to lose a leg. The authorities have finally dropped politically-motivated charges against Limon Hossain, but have not taken action against his attackers, said the rights body. Limon was shot by some RAB personnel in a bungled security operation. Limon, a college student at the time, was in the field near his village in Jhalakati on March 23, 2011, when members of RAB, a paramilitary security force, accused him of being a criminal and shot him at point-blank range. Four days later, Limon’s leg was amputated to save his life. For medical reasons he was not able to return home for more than six months. Brad Adams, HRW’s Asia director, said ‘Bangladesh government needs to take action against the RAB officer who shot Limon, which led him to a permanent disability, as well as those who perverted the course of justice by bringing phony charges against him, according to UNB.
