Punish the student hooligans
Tuesday, 4 February 2014
I saw some pictures in newspapers with utter disappointment and horror. Those were the pictures of the unruly cadres who are said to belong to the student wing of the ruling party brandishing lethal weapons at the Rajshahi University (RU) campus. Around 100 students of RU and eight journalists were seriously wounded when these cadres, along with the law enforcers, attacked the students who were protesting against fee hikes and evening shift masters courses.
We have seen in the past that such incidents always bring ignominy to the ruling people and make them unpopular to the common people. Such brutal scenes terrorise the common students and violate the rule of law.
University is a place to acquire knowledge and it is supposed to produce enlightened citizens but we see nothing but criminal activities in the name of student politics in our country. It must be stopped if we want to protect our educational institutions. I hope the government will take stern action against the student goons who created a reign of terror at the RU campus.
