Wednesday, 18 June 2008

Advisor Committee on Public Purchase Tuesday approved a proposal of the industries ministry to import 12,000 tonnes tons of urea fertiliser from Qatar, reports UNB.

As per the proposal, the state-owned Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) will import the fertiliser in the coming fiscal at a rate of US$ 666 per tonne from Qatar's state-owned fertiliser company, Qafco.

Official sources said Bangladesh estimated that the total fertiliser demands would be 2.85 million tonnes in the coming fiscal of which 1.7 million tonnes will be produced locally by different state-owned fertiliser factories.

The rest 1.15 million tonnes of fertiliser will be imported through private and public sector initiatives.

Of the figure, the government will import a total of 0.4 million tonnes from four middle-east countries -- Qatar, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia -- under state-to-state deals.

The advisory committee, known as Cabinet Purchase Committee, also approved three more purchase proposals with Finance Adviser Mirza Azizul Islam in the chair.

The proposals are appointing a consultancy firm at a cost of Tk. 159.7 million for water and sanitation in the mid-level towns under an ADB-GOB financed project and appointment of two NGOs-VOSD and VRD for nationwide nutrition programme.

The other approved proposal is appointment of contractors for construction of two bridges and one culvert under the 3rd phase of Uttara Residential Model Township Project.
