Push for separate interest rate for shrimp industry
FE REPORT | Tuesday, 5 November 2024
Frozen food exporters have called for a separate interest rate for the shrimp industry in order to generate more export earnings from the sector.
Their other demands include declaring shrimp as an agriculture product like jute and establishing dedicated economic zones for the sector in Khulna and Chittagong.
Leaders of the Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA) have made the demands to Finance and Commerce Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed at a view-exchange meeting held at the secretariat on Monday.
Mr. Salehuddin said Bangladesh shrimp is now much in demand across the global market, but there has been a fall in its production due to traditional harvesting method. It is necessary to raise production by using advanced technology, he added.
There has now been an excellent environment for investment around the country, as the government has recast the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority and Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority, he said.
The adviser urged the business leaders to invest more in the country's private sector.
