Pvt univ authorities to pay VAT, not students: NBR

Thursday, 10 September 2015

Amid private university students’ widespread protests against imposition of VAT on their tuition fees, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Thursday said it is the private university authorities, not the students, will pay the VAT. “The VAT has not been imposed to realise it from the students anew as it remains included in the existing tuition fees. The university authorities are fully responsible for paying the VAT money, not the students in any way,” the NBR said in a clarification as the student protests keep on spreading. Earlier on July 4, the NBR issued a notification imposing 7.5 per cent VAT (Valued added tax) on the tuition fees of the private universities and medical colleges, according to a news agency.
