President M Zillur Rahman Thursday asked the private universities in the country to ensure permanent infrastructures with adequate open spaces and enough free atmosphere to groom their students as enlightened human beings, reports UNB.
"Broadness of thoughts and spirit is needed to build enlightened human beings and for this free and open environment is indispensable," he said while presiding over the 1st convocation of the United International University (UIU) at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city.
Addressing the function, the President said that syllabus of higher education could be completed in a closed-door classroom but it might not inculcate mental broadness in a student. Rather, it would undermine the standard of higher education.
Referring to Shanti Niketan, established by poet Rabindranath Tagore, he mentioned that students there are taught in a free environment mingled with nature.
