Pvt varsities asked to submit reports on own campus by Sept 30

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid asked on Thursday the private universities, which are yet to start their academic activities on their own permanent campuses, to submit the latest progress reports by September 30, reports UNB.
He made the directives while addressing as the chief guest a views exchange meeting between the University Grants Commission (UGC) and authorities of private universities at the UCG auditorium in the city.
Hailing the contributions of private universities to the country's education sector, Mr Nahid urged the universities to give more attention to ensuring standard education overcoming the limitations.
Chairmen of the trustee boards and vice-chancellors of 76 private universities attended the meeting held with UGC chairman Prof Abdul Mannan in the chair. UGC members Prof Dr Abul Hashem, Prof Dr Muhammad Yusuf Ali Mollah and Prof Dr Dil Afroza Begum were present on the occasion.
The UGC chairman informed the meeting that some 17 private universities are carrying out their academic activities on their own campuses established on the required land.
Seven universities are running their activities on campuses on trust/foundation land while nine others started partial activities on buildings established on stipulated amount of land and the construction of campuses of 17 private universities is underway, he said.
Prof Hannan also said the rest universities have taken initiatives to establish their own campuses after buying lands.
Meanwhile, representatives of the private universities called for withdrawing VAT and monitoring fees from private higher educational institutions.
