Pvt varsities must not become profit-making institutions: President

President Abdul Hamid underscored Wednesday the need for the united efforts of all so that private universities cannot turn into profit-making institutions.
"We've to keep in mind that higher educational institutions must not become profit-making business organisation in any way. So, we must ensure together that those are not becoming centres of making profits as they’ll have to become the real hub of acquiring knowledge," he said.
The President said this while addressing the third convocation of Uttara University held at Bangabandhu International Convocation Centre in the city.
A total of 3,011 students received degrees at the convocation while two students were given medals for their outstanding performance, according to a news agency.
Mentioning that the government has widened the scope for setting up more public and private universities to groom up students to conduct research works of international standards, Hamid said, “But, the standards of some universities have recently been discussed and criticised in the newspapers. Allegations of irregularities against some universities have also been found which have frustrated the nation.”
