Pvt varsities urged to create opportunities for poor students

Monday, 17 May 2010

President M Zillur Rahman urged the country's private universities to create greater opportunities for higher education among the poor and disadvantaged section of the population, especially those from the country's rural areas, reports UNB.
The president made the remarks when a delegation of Education Quality Assurance Foundation (EQAF), led by its President Mosleh Uddin Ahmed called on him at Bangabhaban.
During the meeting, Zillur Rahman noted private universities have been built in the capital city, and so the higher education has become more Dhaka-based.
"I urge all concerned to come forward in this regard." Saying that there is no alternative to skilled manpower in facing the challenges of globalisation, the President said it is possible to create the skilled manpower through standard education.
He emphasised the need for establishing more private universities outside the capital city with a view to propagating higher education in a balanced manner across the country.
Zillur Rahman mentioned that presently there are 31 public and 51 private universities in the country involved in extending the higher education, as well as creating the opportunities for the gradually increasing students.
He regretted that apart from a handful at the top, there are question marks raised about education provided by the bulk of the private universities, which charge high tuition fees although they have no necessary infrastructure, full time faculty or library/ laboratory facilities.
"The educational institutions should not be, anyhow, commercialised."
The EQAF, a non-governmental organisation, is working here to ensure quality education for public and private universities.
EQAF President Mosleh Uddin Ahmed said the private universities were built in the country with a view to resisting campus violence and ensuring consistent, time-bound tenures of study in higher education.
The EQAF delegation advocated the creation of an Accreditation Council to ensure quality education in the private universities.
Secretaries concerned to the president's office were present during the meeting.
