Quader berates top cops after finding no police presence during bridge inspection

Sunday, 12 July 2015

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has berated top police officials after finding no police personnel during inspection of a bridge, reports bdnews24.com.
Quader spoke to the inspector general of police, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner and Dhaka district's superintendent of police (SP) over mobile phone after finding no police presence at the capital's Babubazar Bridge.
The minister regularly visits the projects under his ministry and, at times, takes immediate actions over anomalies.
While many have applauded the minister's initiative, others, including some of his party colleagues, have criticised him, terming the whole exercise "eyewash."
After his motorcade reached the Babubazar Bridge Friday, the minister started looking for the police personnel.
Finding no law-enforcer on the bridge, he asked the accompanying officials to call senior police officials from his phone. Quader was heard talking angrily with the police officers at that time.
"I informed you beforehand about my visit at 11am (Friday). Why don't I see any police officer here?" the minister asked DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia.
Half of the bridge is under the jurisdiction of DMP, while Dhaka district police look after the remaining part.  Quader became furious when the SP did not receive his call.  He then called IGP AKM Shahidul Hoque.
"Buses are parked on the Babubazar Bridge. I'm removing those with the help of reporters. But there is no police around. You look into the matter," the minister told the IGP.
