Quality seed can help boost farm output

RAJSHAHI, Mar 24 (BSS): Speakers at the inaugural session of a two-day 'Seed Fair-2011' here Wednesday called for substantial promotion of quality seeds for boosting farm output for the sake of ensuring food security of the nation. They laid stress on making the farmers habituated with application of the newly innovated crop varieties and technologies for turning the agricultural sector into more profitable and sustainable as a whole. Paba Upazila Agriculture Office organised the fair at Naohata Degree College playground with the main thrust of creating an environment for the farmers to learn importance of quality seed including new varieties, its availability and effect in boost up production. Director (Cash Crop) of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Younus Ali addressed the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest while Upazila Chairman Monsur Rahman, Vice-chairman Sufiya Hassan and Nirbahi Officer Abu Selim Mahmudul Hassan spoke as special guests. Deputy Director of DAE, Rajshahi Nurul Amin presided the session while Upazila Agriculture Officer Saleh Ahmed gave an overview of the fair in his address of welcome. The speakers said the country's agriculture sector has started facing various crises including the adverse impact of climate change caused by global worming. So, adoption of updated technologies and varieties has become indispensable to attain the gradually increasing food production target through facing the challenges. They, however, said the fair would contribute a lot to create scopes for the seed entrepreneurs to display their products and to exchange views and ideas with the farmers.
