Question in JS about receiving ‘gold boat’ by minister
Monday, 24 March 2014
A question was raised in Parliament Monday about receiving a ‘gold made boat’ as gift by a state minister, which was later sold following widespread criticism and the money donated to an orphanage.
Jatiya Party MP AKM Mayeedul Islam (Kurigram-3) raised the question in the House.
In a written question, he said the media recently reported that a state minister received the gift (gold made boat). When the media published the news widely, embarrassed junior minister had sold the ‘gold made boat’ and donated the money to an orphanage. Mayeedul Islam said that there is a law in the country, which says if a minister receives any gift worth more than Tk 500 it shall be deposited to the Bangabhaban treasury. He asked whether that law is still in force, according to a news agency.
In a reply to the question, Law Minister Anisul Haq said that a rule, titled ‘Toshakhana (maintenance and administration) Rules 1974’ is still in force.
He mentioned that in that rule it was said that if the President, Prime Minister, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Minister, State Minister, Deputy Minister, Parliament Member and any government official accepts a gift then they will have to report it to the Cabinet Division for fixing its price.
If the Treasury Evaluation Committee, which is formed to fix the price, find out that the price of the gift is more than Tk 30,000 then it should be deposited to the state treasury, the Law Minister said.
On January 24, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam at a reception in Rajshahi received the ‘gold made boat’ as gift.
