RAB, police to ensure security for BNP rally

Wednesday, 19 May 2010

FE Report
The government has beefed up security around Paltan Maidan in the capital to ensure security during BNP's grand rally to be observed on May 19, officials said Tuesday.
The move comes after repeated allegations of the country's main opposition that the government was not showing its willingness to provide enough security for millions of their leaders and supporters who are supposed to attend the rally.
"We've taken tight security arrangements inside and outside the venue in a move to ensure peaceful observance of the divisional rally," DMP Commissioner AKM Shahidul Haq told reporters after visiting the Paltan Maidan in the afternoon.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) would deploy some 1,500 police personnel at the rally while around 500 members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) would also be positioned as part of the three-tier security plan.
