Sunday, 1 June 2014

The Election Commission (EC) has cancelled the nomination of Rafiur Rabbi, considered a frontrunner for the Narayanganj-5 by-election, for defaulting on repayment of loans. Returning Officer Mir Sarwar Morshed announced it on Sunday. Morshed said quoting Bangladesh Bank that Rabbi did not repay the loan taken for his organisation Sign Knitwear, a knitting industry. He took loan of Tk 194 million from Sonali Bank's Narayanganj branch. The branch also issued a report on his failure to repay the loan, the returning officer said. Rabbi, father of slain A-level student Tanvir Mohammad Twaki, said his joining the hustings was part of a process seeking justice for his son. The constituency fell vacant after the death of Nasim Osman, an MP from Jatiya Party. JP has nominated Nasim Osman's younger brother Selim Osman to run for the parliamentary seat, according to bdnews24.com.
