Rahmatganj upset Sheikh Russell

Saturday, 9 June 2007

Rahmatganj MFS caused a big upset beating title contender Sheikh Russell KC by a solitary goal in the day's lone return match of the B League at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city Friday, reports UNB.
With the result, Rahmatganj MFS improved their position securing eight points while Sheikh Russell KC remained at 20 points, both playing 12 matches.
In the day's match, Ashraful Awal Apu scored the all-important goal for Rahmatganj in the 25th minute by a powerful right-footer from the top of the D-box utilising a left side Francis cross (1-0).
Sheikh Russell booters may rue their fate for the defeat as they launched a series of attacks at the beginning of the match but failed to convert any of them into goal.
On the other hand, Rahmatganj made only two attacks in the entire match, which yielded the prized-goal.
Russell KC came close to score in the 17th minute, but a header taken by captain Youness off a Rikta long-pass whistled past the side bar.
Youness must think himself unlucky as his powerful shot from inside the D-box in the 35th minute was saved brilliantly by opponent custodian Anwar at the cost of corner.
After the breather, Anwar again frustrated the Russell KC fans as he foiled a superb Ighir Mohammad angular shot from vantage position at the cost of corner in the 68th minute.
Russell KC again came close to score in the 76th minute, but Ighir's right-footer was again saved by Anwar for corner.
Rahmatganj MFS got a real scoring chance early in the 14th minute, but a powerful shot taken by their foreign recruit Adeyinka from inside the D-box sailed harmlessly over the crossbar.
