Rahul Gandhi lands in city

Rahul Gandhi, Indian member of parliament and general secretary of India's ruling Congress party, arrived in city Friday, said an official of Zia International Airport, report agencies.
Gandhi, son of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and assassinated prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, touched down at around 3.30 pm on a Jet Airways flight, ZIA immigration official Nazir Hossain told bdnews24.com.
Nobel peace laureate and Grameen Bank managing director Prof. Muhammad Yunus formally received Rahul as he landed at Zia International Airport (ZIA). Officials of BRAC were also present.
Senior officials of the government and Indian High Commission were present at the airport amid tight security, he said.
Tofail Ahmed, a police officer on duty at ZIA, told bdnews24.com: "We have been deployed here to provide security cover for a VIP arrival."
The approach to the airport's VIP Lounge was closed to traffic and the whole area was surrounded by members of the Rapid Action Battalion, armed police and intelligence squads.
A contingent of Indian Special Protection Group arrived in city Thursday to ensure total security for the prominent member of India's Nehru-Gandhi dynasty ahead of his visit.
Talking to reporters at the airport, Dr Yunus informed that Rahul said it was an "educational visit" for him.
