Raid to recover looted arms starts Sept 4

Monday, 2 September 2024

The government will conduct a joint raid from Wednesday to recover unauthorised firearms, said Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
"The joint raid will start on Sept 04, 2024," a notice signed by Faisal Hasan, a senior officer at the home ministry reads, reports bdnews24.com.
The raid will kick off the day after the Sept 03 deadline for returning the firearms looted from police.
There were attacks on police stations after Sheikh Hasina resigned her premiership and fled to India in the face of a mass movement.
Policemen fled from most of the police stations. Thousands of firearms and ammunition were looted from unprotected police stations and outposts. The mass looting has raised anxiety.
French Ambassador to Bangladesh Marie Masdupuy expressed concern over the weapons looted from police stations during a meeting with the adviser on Sunday.
On the same day, the interim government suspended all firearms licences issued to civilians during the 15 and a half years of the Awami League government.
Police Headquarters requested all to return the weapons and ammunition looted from police stations, outposts and other structures.
The force then fixed the deadline of returning the firearms on Sept 3.
