Railway services resume partially

FE REPORT | Friday, 2 August 2024

The Bangladesh Railway (BR) resumed rail service on a limited scale on Thursday, two weeks after it had suspended all services following countrywide violence over the quota-reform movement.
Officials said six commuter and local trains operated from 7:00 am until 5:00 pm from Kamalapur Railway Station with no report of schedule disruptions.
BR general manager (eastern zone) Mohammad Nazmul Islam said mail train between Dhaka and Chattogram ran on the route without hassle.
A total of 20 commuter and mail trains operated between Dhaka, Chattogram and Mymensingh during the relaxed period of the ongoing curfew, he told the FE.
In the western zone, officials said, commuter, local and mail trains also ran between Rajshahi, Lalmonirhat, Burimari and Mohonganj.
Both commuter and local trains operated from Kamalapur are Dhaka-Jamalpur-Dewanganj trains, and Titas Express and Rajshahi Express commuter trains.
Other trains operated between Mymensingh and Mohonganj, Mymensingh and Janjira and Chattogram and Chandpur.
"As the first day's experience was good, it's being planned to operate same trains tomorrow (Friday)," said an official.
However, the BR director general earlier said the intercity trains would be operated based on the experience of the first three days.
Rail services resumed ticket sales from counters now, although the BR introduced the online sale of all its tickets to check sales on the black market.
