Bangladesh Railway (BR) is going to establish rail link up to Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) site for smooth and safe transportation of major consignments of the challenging project.
A joint venture firm between Indian and Bangladeshi companies will construct 26.5-km rail track from Ishwardi rail station to the project site at a cost of Tk 1.97 billion, railway officials said.
The track will cover the missing part of the railway so that delicate and big consignments of mostly raw materials can be transported from the Chittagong port smoothly, they said.
The Bangladesh Railway will sign a contract with the joint venture firm, GPT-SEL-CCCL, at Rail Bhaban today (Tuesday).
GPT Infraproject Ltd. of India and Standard Engineering Ltd. and Castle Construction Company Ltd. of Bangladesh have formed the joint venture firm.
The BR has taken up a Tk 3.35 billion project to ensure transportation of the major consignments from Chittagong port through railway as part of the government's plan to keep all modes of transportation from the Chittagong port to the project site open.
The BR has rail track from Chittagong port to Ishwardi through Bangabandhu bridge.
The officials said the new rail track from Ishwardi to project site will be used only for transportation of consignments meant for the project.
The joint venture firm will complete the work in 18 months, they said.
The selection of the firm was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase on June 27.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council approved the Tk 3.35 billion project on June 25.
Under the project, signalling system will also developed.
The RNPP project has been taken to meet the growing demand for electricity in the country with the financial support of Russia.
