Rain brings relief

The city experienced a spell of rain and nor'wester from Thursday night to Friday morning, bringing relief from the swelter at least for a day. According to the Meteorological office, hailstorm with gusty wind hit different parts of Dhaka city including Mirpur, Mohakhali and Ramna areas around 9:30pm on Thursday, followed by thundershower and a downpour which continued till Friday morning. Met office official Abul Kalam said that nor’wester with light gusty wind blew across Dhaka. The wind speed per hour was 52 kilometres, he said. The Met office had forecast medium to heavy nor’wester at different parts, including Dhaka, Sylhet, Rangpur and Khulna, for Thursday. Yesterday’s storm uprooted a tree on the island on Mohakhali-Gulshan road at Amtoli. The first semifinal of the World Twenty20 between West Indies and Sri Lanka was abandoned due to the storm. Later, Sri Lanka won the match by 27 runs in Duckworth-Lewis method, according to a news agency.
