Rain brings relief from searing heat
FE REPORT | Saturday, 10 June 2023
Dhaka city-dwellers heaved a euphoric sigh of relief from the unbearable heatwave and humidity for more than a week as they experienced the much-awaited downpour on Friday.
People in many parts of the country also witnessed light to heavy rain on the day, which gave them respite from the excessive heat of summer.
In Dhaka, the rain started in the morning and continued until afternoon at intervals. It soaked almost all areas of the capital city.
Meteorologists said that Dhaka experienced 47 millimetre (mm) rainfall, the second highest rainfall of this season, until 6pm on Friday.
Earlier, the highest 50 mm rainfall was recorded in the city on May 17, they added.
The highest rainfall of this season, 84 mm, in the country was recorded in Tangail, the BMD officials said.
However, the met office on Friday in its 24-hour bulletin predicted that the ongoing heatwave is likely to continue over the north-western part of the country on Saturday.
Talking to the FE, Tariful Newaz Kabir, a meteorologist at Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), said temperature in Dhaka may rise somewhat on Saturday.
"The amount of rainfall is likely to decrease on the day," Kabir added.
On Friday, the highest temperature in the country was recorded at 37 degrees Celsius in Chuadanga. Meanwhile, the lowest temperature was recorded 23.2 degrees Celsius at Nikli upazila in Kishoreganj.
South-west monsoon has advanced up to Chattogram coast, BMD on Friday said, adding that trough of low lies over West Bengal and its adjoining area.
