Rain downs life, more predicted for next 3 days

FE REPORT | Sunday, 15 September 2024

Heavy rain, coupled with strong winds, hit Dhaka city on Friday night. It continued throughout Saturday.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) recorded 24 millimetres of rainfall in the capital in a day.
"Rain may persist for the next three days due to a low prevailing over the Bay of Bengal and its adjoining plains," stated the Met office.
Meanwhile, city commuters faced delays due to limited transportation and slow-moving traffic during driving rain.
Those heading towards offices or managing important tasks were particularly affected during the downpour.
The Met office further forecast that light-to-moderate rain or thundershower, accompanied by temporary gusty winds, is likely to occur in most parts of the country.
The rain-drenched divisions include Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet.
Some areas may experience moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next three days. Kutubdia witnessed the highest rainfall of 208 mm on Saturday.
In the next three days, according to the Met office, temperatures are expected to drop by 2.0 to 3.0 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, in response to the ongoing adverse weather in coastal regions, Cautionary signal number 02 has been hoisted for inland waterway and signal number 03 for seaports.
Due to turbulent weather, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) cancelled vessel operations on several routes, including Dhaka to Hatia and Betua, and Dhaka to Khepupara, on Saturday.
Operations of launches and sea trucks on other routes such as Narayanganj to Munshiganj and Matlab, Barishal to Ulania, Barishal to Kaliganj, and Bhola to Ilisha and Maju Chowdhuryhat have also been suspended.
Additionally, routes like Alexander-Haimchar and Monpura-Tazumuddin were also affected as per the BIWTA statement.
Speedboat service on the Boalia-Koralia route as well as passenger vessels from Patuakhali to Golachipa, Char Montaz and surrounding areas have been halted due to turbulent rivers.
