Rains and woes of commuters

Thursday, 26 June 2014

I love rains and the rainy season as it brings solace in the sweltering summer when people become too uncomfortable. Although rains give trees and plants a fresh and beautiful look, it creates a lot of problems for Dhaka dwellers, as it makes the movement from one place to another very tough and troublesome. Even after a little rain we find many of the city roads submerged in knee-deep water making movement of pedestrians as well as vehicles a risky affair. Most of our sewerage lines and water supply lines are clogged, thanks to our habit of indiscriminate littering. The government tried several times to ban use of polythene for the shopping purpose, but it yielded no effective results. If we can get rid of the habit of using polythene indiscriminately, many of our problems concerning environment will no more be there. Now the monsoon is passing its peak time and we may witness another long bout of sufferings of commuters in the city. Women, school-going children and elders are the worst sufferers during the monsoon period as it is very difficult for them to find suitable transports, particularly during peak hours. We often are surprised by heavy rains inundating streets hampering the city life. The government should work towards improvement of infrastructure so that we can get rid of the perennial problem of water-logging and the people can move easily during and after heavy rains and it does not cause sufferings that much.
