CHITTAGONG, Jun 24: Incessant rainfall over the last two days caused untold sufferings to the port city dwellers, as low-lying areas were submerged. Sufferings of office-goers mounted due to the lack of public transports in the city.
Bakolia, Muradpur, Sholashahar Rail Gate-2, Agrabad, Shulakbahar, Kapashgola, Bahaddarhat and some other parts of Halishahar in the city were submerged, an official of the Chittagong City Corporation said. "Some low-lying areas have gone under knee-deep water after two days' rain coupled with high tide of the sea," said assistant engineer Sudip Basak of the CCC.
The Met office at Patenga recorded 142mm rainfall in 24 hours till 3.00 pm on Tuesday.
Unloading of bulk cargoes at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port had remained suspended for the last two days, port sources said.
An official at the Radio Control Department of the CPA said continuous rainfall had disrupted unloading of bulk cargoes at the port's outer anchorage but container handling remained almost normal.
