Rains, winds continue to disrupt normal life

Monday, 27 October 2008

FE Report
Rains coupled with gusty winds continued to mount the sufferings of people across the country including the capital Dhaka Sunday.
In the capital, rainfall disrupted the normal life and economic activities. City-dwellers, particularly office-goers and school-children, had to face difficulties to find vehicles in the rains.
Met office expects that the weather will start to improve from tomorrow (Monday) night.
In a special bulletin the met office said the deep depression over northwest Bay and adjoining west central Bay moved rapidly northeastwards and now lies over northwest Bay and adjoining area and was centred at 3.0pm Sunday about 550 kilometres west-southwest of Chittagong port, 515 kilometres west-southwest of Cox's Bazar port and 380 kilometres south-west of Mongla port.
It is likely to intensify further and move in a north/northeasterly direction and may cross Khulna-Barisal coast by morning/noon today (Monday). Squally weather may continue over the coastal areas of Bangladesh, with the sea remaining moderate to rough, the official said.
The maximum sustained wind speed within 48 kilometre of the depression centre is about 50 kilometre rising to 60 kilometres, the bulletin said adding that sea will remain rough. Temperatures are not likely to fall further, said an official of the Met office.
Met office has ordered maritime ports of Cox's Bazar, Chittagong and Mongla to keep hoisted local cautionary single number 3.
Under its influence the low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Cox's Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Borguna, Patuakhali, Barisal, Bhola, Pirojpur, Jhalkathi, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and other offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by wind driven surge of 3-5 feet height above normal astronomical tide, the bulletin said.
