Raise fiscal jurisdiction ceiling to Tk1.0m

Speakers demand at a seminar

FE REPORT | Thursday, 30 May 2024

Citizens of different municipalities have to go to the courts to settle petty disputes, in spite of their unwillingness, as ceiling of the fiscal jurisdiction is limited in an existing law.
Keeping this in view, speakers at a national seminar on Wednesday suggested raising the ceiling to around Tk1.0 million from existing Tk25,000, which will only require the amendment of the law.
They came up with the observations at a national seminar styled as the 'Necessity of Conciliation of Dispute (Municipal areas) Board Act, 2004' jointly organised by the Madaripur Legal Aid Association (MLAA), Municipal Association of Bangladesh (MAB), and The Asia Foundation with support of Citizen's Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh at the Brac Centre in the city's Mohakhali area.
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam as the chief guest attended the seminar moderated by the Convenor of Citizen's Platform Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya.
After listening to the observations made by the participants including senior lawyers and municipality mayors, the minister said his office would work on making the law time-befitting and useful for the country's people.
"We want to facilitate it for people to avail legal services through people-friendly laws," he said, adding that a smart move can help enact a law within three months only. He also said the government has been imparting training to the stakeholders through local government training institutions so that they can serve the people better.
The Country Representative for the Asia Foundation in Bangladesh Kazi Faisal Bin Seraj, Madaripur Municipality Mayor Khalid Hossain Yead, chief coordinator of MLAA Khan Mohammad Shahid and Senior Lawyer ZI Khan Panna were present on the occasion, among others. Project coordinator of the MLAA advocate Ibrahim Mia presented the keynote paper at the seminar.
