Raising awareness of dengue outbreak
Friday, 27 May 2022
As we are witnessing rains, it is learnt that cases of dengue are reportedly increasing at an alarming rate in Dhaka city. According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), at least 37 dengue patients are now undergoing treatment in various hospitals of the capital. Moreover, a number of people are showing signs of the disease, but yet to undergo a test.
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne infection that can lead to a severe flu-like illness. It is caused by four different viruses and spread by Aedes mosquitoes. We can prevent it by destroying mosquito habitats and limiting exposure to bites. While it is necessary for the authorities concerned to control the spread of the disease, awareness of the disease and steps necessary to avoid getting infected is of utmost importance.
Dengue cases saw a sharp rise in May, 2021 due to the intermittent rain in the pre-monsoon season. The DGHS in a pre-monsoon survey in April found a higher density of Aedes mosquito in Dhaka compared with what was in 2021 and predicted a worsening dengue situation unless quick steps are taken immediately.
