Sunday, 23 March 2008

FE Report
Speakers at a discussion in Rajbari have demanded immediate rehabilitation of the district's river erosion-hit people and construction of a dam from Gudarbazar to Dhunchi to save the area from erosion of the Padma.
They made the demands at a discussion on the river erosion at Rajbari and its solutions, organised by the Nagorik Somaj, Rajbari (NSR) in Gudarbazar area Friday.
NSR President Dr Fakir Abdur Rashid presided over the programme. Former minister Dr Mizanur Rahman Shelley was present as the chief guest.
In the meeting, Nodi Vangon Protirodh Committee (NVPC), an action organisation to save the area from river erosion, was formed with Brig Gen (retd) Azizul Huq as its president.
Among others, Editor of the Bhorer Kagoj Shyamol Datta, ex-president of the National Press Club Hassan Shahriar, Executive Editor of UNB Roushan Zaman, President of Rajbari Press Club Abu Musa Biswas, and Chairman of Rajbari Municipality Md Ali Chowdhury also spoke on the occasion.
The speakers said the Padma has been causing serious erosion in Rajbari, and if it continues to erode in such a way, the existence of the entire district will definitely be at stake.
So, if the proposed Gudarbazar-Dhunchi embankment is constructed, it can save the district from the Padma's erosion as well as can be used as a by-pass road.
Besides, it is necessary to take necessary measures to rehabilitate the people, already affected by the river erosion in the area, the speakers also said.
It was decided in the meeting that the NVPC, in collaboration with the local NGOs, would soon form a movement in the capital to drum up their demands and raise awareness regarding the issue.
