Rajshahi div transport strike continue for 2nd day

Monday, 26 May 2014

The indefinite transport strike, enforced by Transport Owners and Workers Federation to press home its 6-point-demand, continued for the second day in 16 districts under Rajshahi division on Monday. Their demands include a ban on the movement of unauthorised vehicles on roads and highways, putting an end to harassment by BRTA authorities in issuing driving licenses, withdrawal of ‘false’ cases filed against motor workers and taking steps to stop realisation of illegal toll. Road communications between Dhaka and the 16 districts remained halted for the strike, causing immense suffering to the commuters. Leaders of Transport Owners and Workers Federation said Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner assured them of meeting their demands at a meeting on Thursday. They have been compelled to enforce the strike as the Divisional Commissioner did not meet their demands by that time. Meanwhile, a meeting between transport workers and owners and the administrations is likely to be held this (Monday) afternoon to resolve the problems. Transport owners and workers started the indefinite strike in the 16 districts north and north-western districts from 6:00am on Sunday to press for the demands, according to UNB.
