The cabinet has approved a draft of ‘The Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank Act, 2014’ aimed at bringing more people under the services of the bank through expanding its activities. The approval was given at the regular weekly meeting of the cabinet held on Monday at Bangladesh Secretariat with the Prime Minister in the chair. After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan briefed reporters. He said a little change has been made in the existing law by updating it and broadening the definition of agriculture and small farmers. Under the new definition, he said, processing of fish and livestock products would be considered as agricultural activities, while fishermen as well as livestock and poultry producers would be treated as small farmers. The cabinet secretary said the newly-established Rangpur division would come under the coverage of the bank. Bhuiyan said the draft proposed increasing the number of directors of the bank to 11 from 7 and creating a post of Deputy Managing Director, as the activities of the bank have been expanded to a great extent, according to BSS.
