RAJUK, ministry working on same project without knowing!

Wednesday, 8 December 2010

FE Report
In the absence of coordination between RAJUK and communication ministry both the authorities have undertaken a project on construction of a tunnel connecting Jahangirgate with Rokeya Sarani at Agargaon in the city.
Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkhya (RAJUK) planned to construct a tunnel from in front of Jahangirgate to Rokeya Sarani at Agargaon to provide bypass to commuters from Mohakhali direction to the northwest of the city on which the communications ministry has been working since March without knowing RAJUK plan.
Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) under the ministry of communications is now on the process of selecting a consultant for carrying out feasibility study on the proposed multi-lane road tunnel having a length of 2500 metres.
Officials said the tunnel proposal was sent to the Economic Relation Department to find financiers.
The in planning the same project by two agencies was revealed during a meeting with communications minister Syed Abul Hossain in the chair today (Tuesday).
The Communications Ministry organised the inter-ministerial meeting to coordinate the development works, mainly construction plans of four tunnels on Kazi Nazul Islam road and metro rail (MRT).
Officials said Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) has planned to construct four vehicular underpass under the supervision of Army at Shahbagh, Sheraton, Bangla Motor and Sonargaon crossings to enable vehicles to avoid signals which is responsible for gridlock.
However Dhaka Transport Coordination Board (DTCB) will need the same road for constructing the country's mass rapid transport (MRT) as it has already finalized the alignment of the same road from Pallabi to Sayedabad crossing through elevated way.
Officials said both the projects have faced problems in designing the infrastructures due to non-availability of enough space without disturbing surface road. Moreover acquisition of lands would be difficult due to construction of private buildings.
