RAJSHAHI, Jul 31: A huge quantity of low-quality and harmful carbide mixed mangoes are being imported from India through the Sona Masjid landport customs corridor every day, sources said.
It was learnt that a record quantity of Indian mangoes entered the country through the landport recently.
A total of 112 trucks laden with Indian mangoes were unloaded at the Sona Masjid land port last week.
As there is no quality control device and quality controller of fruits at the Sona Masjid landport, the low quality Indian mangoes are getting its way to Bangladesh in exchange of valuable foreign exchange.
Not only that, the Indian mangoes that were entering Bangladesh at Sona Masjid through Mohdipur customs of India were packed after mixing with toxic carbide at the mango stores in India, sources said.
Sources further said despite a bumper production of mangoes in Rajshahi and Chanpainawabganj districts this year, a section of corrupt businessmen were importing a huge quantity of low quality Indian mangoes.
In the situation, the mango farmers have asked the government to increase the duty on imported mangoes and to stop mango import from India as local mangoes are still abundant in the orchards.
