Rampura road blockade resumes Thursday morning

The besieging of Malibagh-Rampura-Badda road by the students of East West University and other private universities has been suspended on Wednesday night for hours considering the sufferings of commuters. The protesting students have threatened to resume the besiegement programme, called for cancellation of VAT imposition on private universities, from this (Thursday) morning. East West University student Tawfiq told reporters that they had suspended the besiegement of Malibagh-Rampura-Badda road last night considering the sufferings of commuters. The protest will resume at 9:00am on Thursday and continue until their demands are met, he added. According to him, students of other universities including BRAC University, Independent University, Bangladesh, North South University, Daffodil University, Uttara University, South East University and AIUB are expected to join the protest programme on Thursday. On Wednesday, students of East West University gathered on one of the main thoroughfares of the city in front of their university at 2:00pm and besieged the busy road protesting VAT imposition. They also gathered on Rampura Bridge and staged protest rally, triggering a big traffic congestion on the road and other busy roads and thoroughfares. Gulshan Zone assistant commissioner (AC) Rafiqul Islam said the law enforcers arrived at the spot and tried to pacify the protesting students and persuade them to withdraw their road blockade, according to a news agency.
