Rana Plaza victims: ILO compensation process starts in Dec

The disbursement process of Rana Plaza Trust Fund to compensate the victims of last year’s multi-storey building collapse in Savar will start by this (December, 2014) month. The 9-storey Rana Plaza which housed five readymade garment factories when it collapsed on April 24, 2013, near Savar Bus Stand, killed around 1100 people and injured about 3000. Many injured people and the family members of the dead have reportedly not yet received compensation. President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) M Atiqul Islam told a press conference in Dhaka on Saturday that disbursement process of the ILO-managed Rana Plaza Trust Fund will start by Dec this year. ‘I had a discussion with the ILO country director 10 days back. They’ll start the disbursement process by December,’ Atiqul Islam said at the press conference held at the BGMEA headquarters, according to private TV channels.
