RANGPUR, Oct 4: As the holy Eid-ul-Azha is knocking at the door the blacksmiths at different upazilas in Rangpur district are passing busy time. They are busy sharpening and making knives, machetes and choppers etc for slicing the flesh of sacrificial animals.
Dulal Miah (50), a blacksmith at Lalbagh area in Rangpur city told The Financial Express they are waiting for the time because their income increases significantly during the time of Eid-ul-Azha, as only this time in the year the demand for their products increases a lot, he added.
"On the eve of Eid-ul-Azha, we do not even have the time to breathe, whereas we stay almost workless for the rest of the year," said a smiling Dulal, adding, "Although there're wholesale buyers of knifes and other slaughtering tools all the year round, retail buyers rush to us during Eid-ul-Azha", he further said.
The price of these sharp tools varies with the quality and quantity of the iron. Currently, 'chapatis' are selling at Tk 250 to Tk 500, butcher knives at Tk 100 to Tk 200, small knives at Tk 25 to Tk 75 and cleavers at Tk 150 to Tk 350.
