RANGPUR, Nov 25: The small-scale hide traders and seasonal "fariahs" of Rangpur are facing huge losses this year owing to shortage of capital, lack of buyers and low price of sacrificial animal hides.
Leaders of the hide traders association blamed sudden lowering of the fixed purchasing price for the sacrificial animals' hides by the bigger traders of Dhaka just before the Eid-ul-Azha.
According to them, before Eid the cattle hides were being purchased and sold at between Tk 1,500 and Tk 2,800 per piece (at Tk 75 to 90 per Sq foot) but the situation aggravated when the big traders in Dhaka set a fixed purchased rate of cattle hides at Tk 55 to Tk 60 per Sq foot for Dhaka and Tk 45 to 50 out side of Dhaka few days before the Eid festival. That reset the price of a piece of hide at Tk 1200 to Tk 1600 on an average.
Md Asadul Haq, a seasonal hide trader of Rangpur sadar told the FE that he bought at least 120 pieces of cattle hide that cost him Tk 1000 to 1200 each. But now he is worried about the fall in prices. Besides there is lack of buyers from outsides of the district, he also said.
Another seasonal hide trader Hasan Ali said if the tanneries do not buy hides at higher prices then the smugglers would buy those at higher rates for the Indian markets. Eventually smuggling may create a negative impact on the leather industry of our country, he added.
President of Rangpur hide traders Association Abdul Latif Khan told the FE that the number of sacrificial animal was lower this year and the district level hide traders and Aratdars do not have adequate capital.
