Tuesday, 6 December 2011

Our Correspondent RANGPUR, Dec 5: Landless people of Rangpur district held a rally and brought out a procession in the town on Sunday to press home their 8-point demands including allocation of khas land. Several hundred landless people, under the banner of Rangpur Zila Bhumihin Sangram Parishad, brought out a huge procession which paraded the main streets of the town. Later they gathered at the deputy commissioner's (DC) office premises with banners and festoons. Idris Ali and Ranjit Kumar Sarker, president and secretary of the Parishad addressed the rally. Leaders of several organisations urged the government to take initiative to allot khas land among the landless people in Rangpur and other districts. They said allocation of khas land was an election manifesto of the Grand Alliance government. They also alleged that, the government, instead of giving them khas land is trying to evict the landless people from khas land. They warned of non-stop movement if the government fails to meet their demands within three months. After the rally, they placed a memorandum to the prime minister through the deputy commissioner of Rangpur to meet their 8-point demands.
