Rangpur region experiences adverse climate

Sunday, 27 April 2014

An adverse weather condition is prevailing over the greater Rangpur region. The region is experiencing sweltering heat during daytime while moderate cold spell sweeps it at night. Dew also falls at night. Due to the huge fluctuation of day-and night-time temperatures, the people are falling sick. Under the influence of the unfavourable weather, vegetables and crops on the farmlands are also severely affected. Chief Meteorologist of Rangpur Met office Atiqur Rahman said the difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures in the northern part of the country has increased in the recent times. But he could not cite any reasons for this huge fluctuation of temperature. Director of the Meteorology Department Shah Alam said that since Rangpur region is close to the Himalayan mountain range, a moderate cold spell is sweeping over the region from midnight to morning. He said that the situation is an impact of climate change in Rangpur region. Prof Dr Masum A Patwari, chief of the Geography and Environment Science at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, said: “The northern region of the country is experiencing the impact of global climate change.” He termed it as ‘desertification process’ as a result of which there will be long-spell of drought, depletion of groundwater level and the death of large trees, according to bdnews24.com.
