Rangpur region produced highest 1.76 million tonnes of Boro in the last season, which is almost 10 per cent of the country's total 17.78 million tonnes of yield of the rice.
Farmers of the region brought 46,07,630 hectares under the Boro cultivation, which is also highest in term of cultivable land among 23 rice growing areas of the country.
In 2006-07, Boro production in Rangpur region was 1.58 million tonnes, according to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
Pabna region, however, topped the per hectare yield of 4.277 tonnes although its overall production was only 0.85 million tonnes.
Rajshahi region that stood second in respect to overall production at 1.62 million tonnes also held the second position in per hectare yield with 4.268 tonnes.
Rangpur region that achieved per hectare yield of 4.008 tonnes comes third.
The Boro production in Dinajpur, Bogra, Jessore, Kishoreganj, Comilla, Sylhet and Dhaka regions was over 1.0 million tonnes.
The quantity was 18.69 per cent higher over 14.97 million tonnes recorded in 2006-07. Average yield rate of 2007-2008 was estimated at 3.855 tonnes per hectare, which was 9.67 per cent higher compared to that of last year, said the BBS.
The BBS said Boro is now single major cereal crop in the country accounting for more than fifty per cent of total rice production.
It is largely dependent on irrigation and proper application of other major inputs such as seeds, fertiliser and insecticides.
BBS said: "Favourable weather condition and high price of rice also encouraged the farmers to bring more land under Boro crop cultivation. As a result, area of Boro cultivation has increased significantly."
The total area under Boro crop has been estimated at 46,07,630 hectares as compared to 4257873 hectares in last year, which is 8.21 per cent higher, it added.
