The government has recently approved Banarasi Palli development projection Rangpur to eliminate poverty by developing the designated area by building working sheds, providing training and ensuring credit facilities, official said.
Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) chairman Md. Siddiqur Rahman told FE, "The projected cost of this Banarasi Palli is Tk 23.77 million and the project is expected to be completed by June, 2011 at Talukhabu village under Gangachara upazila."
He said, "It is the second Banarasi Palli of this country and we are hopeful that government's measures to boost the weavers' community of the Monga affected area will help in increasing their income, employment and economic activities."
"As the district is far located away from gas and power supply sources so the government decided to establish Banarasi Palli development project there."
BSCIC chief said, "The weavers' community in the Monga affected area has been suffering from various problems such as scarcity of raw materials, lack of training and marketing facilities and so the government has taken the step to facilitate them."
"The government has decided to disburse credit worth Tk 3.4 million among 67 families who are already making their living in the Banarasi Palli but scattered.
He said, "A total of 24 new entrepreneurs will be allocated sheds in the project who would in turn provide the weavers total support for production."
"The government will conduct training among 480 weavers of this area and provide marketing facilities through establishment of Sales and Display Centre (SDC)."
"We are working on this project and expect that the implementation of this development project will begin July, 2010."
"It is a total locally financed project that will be implemented by BSCIC under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) of 2010-1011 fiscal year."
On the other hand, finished products of the weavers are being sold at minimum prices, but middlemen are enjoying the maximum profit.
The industry people are hopeful that this project might bring good days for the weavers of the Monga affected area.
