RANGPUR, Oct 23: The handloom industries in Rangpur district have been in sorry state for a long time.
The industries had a glorious past, but now with the passage of time those industries are facing the threat of extinction.
Sources said that the reasons behind this miserable condition are many including scarcity of yarn, shortage of funds, apathy in government patronage, abnormal price hike of raw materials, easy availability of smuggled Indian fabrics, lack of modern equipment, change in people's taste and so on.
At present about 6,000 people in eight upazilas are directly dependent on the handloom industry and are still clinging to their ancestral profession.
According to sources this number is declining day by day, as weavers are forced to engage themselves to other trades for their survival.
Weavers of Gangachara Upazila in the district told FE that unless positive steps were taken promptly regarding this failing sector, they would have no other option but to close down their business.
They urged the authorities concerned to take immediate measures to save the handloom industries and protect the weavers and their families from ruination.
