FE REPORT | Monday, 19 August 2024
The government has appointed Khondoker Rashed Maqsood, a banker, as chairman of Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC).
The Financial Institutions Division (FID) under the Ministry of Finance on Sunday issued a circular to this effect.
At the same time, the FID has cancelled another circular issued last week confirming appointment of economist Dr M Masrur Reaz as BSEC chairman.
Mr Reaz on Saturday expressed his regret to join the BSEC and after that the government appointed Mr Maqsood as the chairman.
Mr Maqsood who completed MBA in Finance from the IBA of the University of Dhaka started his career with American Express Bank as a management trainee in 1992.
He served at different banks in the country and abroad for around 30 years. He was the managing director of Standard Bank and NRBC Bank. Maqsood also served as managing director and country officer of Citibank NA Bangladesh.
The post of the BSEC chairman remains vacant since August 10 as the immediate past chairman Prof Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam resigned following a change in the political regime.
Later, the government appointed Mr. Reaz on Tuesday but he on Saturday expressed inability to join the BSEC as he decided to stick to promoting necessary policy analysis and reform ideas for the country's economy.
Presently, there are two commissioners in the BSEC and the appointment of two other commissioners are required to fill the void as the commission comprises a chairman and four commissioners.
