Raw hide collection has declined this season compared to previous year due to its short supply from North-Western regions.
The collection of the item hit a record high during the Eid-ul-Azha.
Around 8 million of sacrificial animal including 5 million cows and 3 million goats and sheep were slaughtered across the country this year while the price dipped notably compared with the previous year, according to the Department of Live Stock (DoLS) and raw hide merchant association.
The state-run four commercial banks sanctioned Tk 3.65 billion as loan for the tanners, which was 15.5 per cent higher than previous year when 3.16 billion was given as loan to facilitate the tanners in purchasing rawhide, sources said.
But, the tanners failed to collect expected hide even after two months of Eid-Ul-Azha, the main occasion for the merchants to collect the product (nearly 48 per cent out of the total demand).
President of Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchants' Association (BHSMA) Md Aftab Khan told the FE that they have collected and sold out nearly 5.0 million pieces of raw hide including 3.5 million pieces of cow skin and 1.5 million of goat-sheep skins after two months of the Eid-ul-Azha (held on November 7, 2011).
"During the matching period (after two months of the sacrificial ceremony), they collected nearly 6 million pieces of hide including 3.9 million pieces of cow skin and 2 million pieces of goat-sheep skins and sold those to the tanners," he said.
"Although more animal were slaughtered this year than the previous year, but the collection was lower," he said.
Tanners claimed that many of the seasonal traders are stockpiling the product to go for further bargaining while many of the traders were also involved in smuggling the item to neighboring India where cowhide has a great demand.
They also expressed their concern that this restoring would affect the quality of skins seriously as scientifically, raw hide should be processed within two and half months.
Bangladesh Tanners' Association (BTA) officials told the FE that they expected to get 4.5 million pieces of cow hide from the last Eid-ul-Azha.
However, rawhide trade this season will stand at around Tk 20 billion, according to the sector insiders.
More than 48 pe rcent of the total rawhide is collected following the Eid-ul-Azha, around 10 per cent during the Eid-ul-Fitr and Shab-e-Barat, 2 per cent during Kali Puja and the rest round the year, according to the Department of Livestock.
The leather and leather goods fetched nearly $155 million in the country's export basket in first six months of the fiscal year 2011-12 showing a 20.59 per cent growth when all other major export items witnessed a poor growth, the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data showed.
