RAJSHAHI, June 3: Reazun Nabi Dudu, Acting Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC), unveiled a Tk 1.623 billion (162.3 crore) budget of the RCC for the financial year 2008-2009 in a press conference held at the auditorium of RCC Monday morning.

Last fiscal year's proposed budget was Tk 1.521 billion but the revised budget of the year stood at Tk 752 million.

Acting Mayor Dudu mentioned that the revenue income of the RCC did not increase during the last one decade, though the population of the city and the activities of RCC increased. He indicated that the holding taxes and the water supply bills might be increased and coordinated.

Dudu further mentioned in his budget speech that five of the development projects undertaken by the RCC were awaiting approval of the ECNEC (Executive Committee of National Economic Council). The projects are: development of infrastructure, drainage and water supply system, procurement of required machineries for development and maintenance of RCC roads, construction of an east-west link road from Postal Academy crossing to Rajshahi-Natore road, construction of drains and development of infrastructure of two graveyards under RCC.

In an answer to a question on mosquito eradication programme, Chief Health Officer of RCC Dr Rezvi Sultan mentioned that the RCC was now opting for killing mosquito larvae only, not the flying mosquitoes, and fogger machines would no longer be used for eradicating mosquitoes. As a result, several hundred fogger machines procured at a cost of several million taka will gather rust.

In an answer to another question, the RCC acting myor said there was no corruption in employment of seasonal and daily-basis labourers of RCC. He, however, admitted that there was excess manpower in the RCC, according to the manpower structure. But still the workforce was not enough for rendering various civic and essential services.
