RCHRC light of hope for northern cancer patients

RAJSHAHI, June 17: Rajshahi Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (RCHRC) has been contributing a lot for the welfare and treatment of cancer patients of Rajshahi region for over one and a half decades.
A press conference was held at a local community centre in Rajshahi to apprise journalists about the activities of RCHRC and to express their gratitude for those who donated money for the construction of infrastructure of the hospital and those who are providing medical instruments and rendering free consultation services for the cancer patients.
RCHRC General Secretary Patric Bipul Biswas read out the written statement while the conference was attended and addressed, among others, by RCHRC Vice-President Shamsul Alam, Research Director Khalequzzaman, Dr Mahbubul Alam, the Daily Sonali Sangbad Editor Liakat Ali.
It is learnt that RCHRC, the only specialised cancer hospital and research centre outside the capital, renders services including chemotherapy, electrophoresis and mammography almost free of cost. Double breast check up at the hospital is conducted only at Tk 500, endoscopy and colonoscopy for gastrointestinal diseases are also available at the centre. There are six beds and six regular doctors working at the hospital where 20-30 patients come daily for treatment and consultation. The RCHRC is conducted by a 15-member executive body and 195 life members.
The RCHRC lacks the machine for testing tumours and needs to procure an MRI/CT scan machine.
GA Zakeria of Cologne University and KH Hoever of Heidelberg University of Germany are known to have promised to donate one modern radiotherapy unit for RCHRC but a modern radio protective room to accommodate the machine is required which will cost nearly Tk 10 million to build.
Generous people and organisations including Kristiansand-Rajshahi Friendship committee of Norway, Rotary Club of Kristiansand, Rotary Club of Yodogawa, Higashi-Yodo Rotary Club and Oyodo and Rotary Club of Osaka, Japan, Rotary Club (RC), Rajshahi, RC Padma and RC Metropolitan and some Rotary Clubs of Bangladesh, Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, Lions Club of Rajshahi and different social organisations have agreed to assist in running the RCHRC.
Abul Mostafa from Birmingham, UK and Shamim Khan of Perth, Australia are rendering continuous support to this hospital.
The general member fees is Tk 250 as admission fees and Tk 200 a year while life member fee is Tk 5,000, donor member fee Tk 10,000 or more, fee for patron category is Tk 50,000 or more.
Moreover, by donating Tk 200,000 only, any one can have a cabin permanently named after him/her or his/her nominee's name. Zakat money is also accepted in the Zakat fund for the treatment of the poor patients.
