RAJSHAHI, Jun 13 (BSS): Agro-experts at a workshop here Wednesday stressed the need for time-befitting and realistic marketing management for agro-products to further boosting yields in the economy's largest sector.
Since proper marketing is a must for raising production in the agriculture sector, they called for concerted efforts to ensure management in this field.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) under its Northwest Crop Diversification Project (NCDP) organised the workshop on "Marketing Management and Maintenance" to create awareness about marketing management among the field-level officials concerned.
Additional Director of DAE Mozaharul Islam addressed the inaugural function as the chief guest with DAE Deputy Director Rabindra Kumar Majumder in the chair. Some 95 district and upazila-level DAE officials and NGO representatives from eight districts of the region participated in the workshop.
Officials told the news agency that Tk 3.42-billion (341.90 crore) NCDP is being implemented in 60 upazilas in Rajshahi division since January 2001, aimed at diversifying crops in the northwest region to increase regional and farm incomes, thereby to alleviate poverty.
In addition to supporting field extension and training programme, improving access to better technologies and ensuring the supply of high quality planting materials for a wide variety of high-value crops, various agencies are supporting the project with adaptive research.
They said the project is also helping improve marketing for the agricultural products through strengthening the Department of Marketing to allow collect, collate and disseminate accurate, dependable and timely information on prices and demands for high value crops at appropriate focal points.
Under the marketing support component, they said, a total of 60 grower markets in 60 upazilas and 16 wholesale markets in 16 districts are being renovated and upgraded with modern facilities.
