Rebels form military council in Benghazi

Wednesday, 2 March 2011

BENGHAZI, Mar 1: Anti-regime leaders in Benghazi said Tuesday they have formed a military council in the eastern Libyan city which has become the hub of efforts to topple Moamer Gaddafi. The council, comprising officers who joined protesters against Gaddafi's rule, will liaise with similar groups in other freed cities in the east but it was not immediately clear if there were plans for a regional command. Meanwhile, the situation on Libya's border with Tunisia has reached crisis point, as tens of thousands of foreigners flee unrest in the country, the UN says. Aid staff seem unable to cope with the influx, say correspondents. - Agencies
